I live in Harris County Texas. My fiance actually works in biometrics doing fingerprint scanners and the like for texas's largest DMV sites and prisons and I can tell you there are many people in charge of those outfits that have absolutely no idea what is going on and have no mastery in their field.

2:27 -Russia- Israel hacked the elections...
The amount of propaganda and 🐃💩 John Oliver spews is sickening..🤮
"Some of these companies involved in U.S. elections, such as Voxeo, which mis-tallied the votes of the Iowa caucus in 2004 giving John Forbes Kerry an undeserved boost, are owned or controlled by Israeli military intelligence. In many cases, the election software is controlled by the Israelis and through back doors they are able to manipulate the results.
The controlled media ignores the fundamental problem that there is no transparency in American elections. The theft of American elections by privately owned election and software companies tied to Israeli intelligence is an absolute non-issue in the Zionist-controlled media in the United States."

@Cryptic Scope John Oliver's greatest skill as host of "Last Week Tonight" is in reassuring his audience that they are, in fact, as smart as they think they are, and most definitely smarter than everyone else. What Oliver is really doing with his show is inoculating his audience from thinking critically. Oliver serves up the very bitter pill of American Empire and Citizen Subservience wrapped in a delicious serving of liberal red meat. His audience is too enamored with it's own delusions of superiority to realize that they are, in fact, just like those ridiculous Fox News viewers they love to hate, in that they too are gullible rubes lapping up gobs of American Imperialism by the bucketload. What the hell am I talking about? How can everyone's favorite, goofy, Brit really be a propaganda tool? That's how propaganda works. If it is obvious, it isn't any good. "Last Week Tonight" is really good propaganda because the show, and its host John Oliver pretend to be truth tellers against propaganda. Oliver sells himself as the brave and noble truth teller, a much needed check to the power of the mainstream media. But Oliver only mimics speaking truth to power and standing up for the little guy. He appears to plant his flag on the high ground of rational thought, moral superiority and common sense, and waves it with a robust sense of self-satisfaction. This is all little more than theatrics though, because the reality is that John Oliver doesn't speak truth to power, he is merely a puppet of power, a useful idiot, a weapon they use to pacify and control those who believe themselves to be well informed and deeply critical thinkers. The stark truth is that John Oliver doesn't stand up for the little guy, he consistently kisses up and kicks down. And as for being a symbol of rational thinking, Oliver instead waves a red flag of emotion in front of liberals in order to get them on his side and then feeds them misinformation, disinformation and propaganda while they are in their highly emotional state.

Around 13 minutes into this you have an error. Using RAS (remote access services) dialing directly into a modem isn't "on the Internet." Just as you answering a phone doesn't mean you're on the Internet (unless you're using a VoIP that uses the Internet as not all VoIP is an Internet based service). In order to connect to the voting booth modem you'd have to know the specific number used. Then to access you'd have to know the login if they didn't use another method to authenticate. Furthermore, most RAS servers are setup to only accept inbound calls from specified numbers. So provided security was setup (taking literally a few seconds) it'd take some serious effort to get in.
So at worst Putin could go "War Games" (80s movie pretending to set a computer to dial every phone number) and hope to connect to a RAS server that is also a voting machine. IF Putin found out the number then he'd need to know the login info or specifically what system being used to attempt to hack it. Since over a dialup connection this would be obvious to any stander by that there is a lot of unwarranted activity going on.
It's difficult but not impossible to hack but... it's definitely not on "the Internet."

Feel free to subscribe to my channel and I'm available to consult for tech, military, security (overall, digital to physical), and sadly politics related topics.

I wasn't paying close attention, this was playing in the background and I heard the mention of the modem so listened in harder LoL. So perhaps other misconceptions about tech in this excellent otherwise video. :-)

Have you heard of our lord and savior two factor authentication? Everyone has a cell phone, have them use it to confirm their votes. And yes, I realize that when I say "everyone" that is not actually the case but I'd much rather have a somewhat less safe process of voting for that small portion of people than have it for everyone.
But hey, we have a great system already in place for the 2020 election! If Trump get elected again we know, for a fact, that the system is being tempered with.

I mean seriously, banks and many other companies that live and die by being able to accurately identify their customers are apparently doing fine. Use their technology and make this standard EVERYWHERE. Seriously, I'm not an American and if you want to do your part in not making your country look like a bunch of complete idiots to the rest of the world go and make sure this happens. This is *NOT* a technical issue this is legislative issue. YOU are literally supporting the RUSSIANS if you don't make sure your state is using the best and most up to date voting systems available.
DewMan001 - преди 8 дни
I mean... Couldn't you just get rid of the machines entirely? Because you need to be confident in the software on the machines, in the company that made them, that they hopefully aren't connected to the internet (just assume they are, it's voting, you need a level of paranoia here)... There are too many moving parts that could be broken in to. A pencil and a bit of paper has two moving parts, it's tried and tested, and it's noticeable when there's a problem.

In the UK we use pen and paper, the ballot box is sealed until it's opened at the counting facility, and it has to be transported to that facility with a member of each party to ensure the seals were never tampered with. Sometimes low-tech is bettet

I live in Calgary, and worked as a Supervisory Deputy Returning Officer in our last provincial election. For the first time, we used electronic counting machines - to speed up the vote-counting process.
All ballots were printed on PAPER. The voter would mark their ballot, drop it in the ballot box, and at the end of the day, those ballot boxes would be shipped off to Edmonton, where the electronic counting machines were located.
It greatly improved efficiency, while (and this is the point John's making), gives us a way to audit the result if the machines fail/get hacked.
For once, Trump got it right. Keep the ballots on paper. This hybrid approach works WELL.

Do a dual vote, paper and electronic. The paper validates the electronic, they are linked by a code so you can check that your paper vote corresponds to your electronic one. If there is a discrepancy it gets investigated. Should help audit votes and mean that there is no single point of failure, e.g. person counting the vote cant change your vote, even if you get hacked, you still have paper. Would this work?

" Election Day 2020: 32 Americans dead, over 200 injured, martial law declared and the election itself is canceled. While this horrific scenario seems more like the plot of a Hollywood film, such was the end result of a recent simulation examining the preparedness of U.S. officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Secret Service against “bad actors” seeking to undermine the upcoming presidential election. Jesus. why don't you just have everyone cast a ballot on paper in an easy to understand way, put it in a locked box which can only be opened in a room with representatives of all invested parties present for counting (by the way have a few guys with the boxes too when they move)? It's tried, tested and pretty much bombproof.
Biggest issue in the UK is potentially needing valid, government issued or backed ID with you in order to vote, which will disproportionately affect the poorest in the country (who funnily enough are more likely to vote against the party putting the legislation through). It's a great example of locking out a number of legitimate votes on an order of thousands of times higher than any voting fraud that actually happens.
If you're going to commit electoral fraud in the UK you do it by getting as many elderly people as you can to authorise you to vote on their behalf and just putting their votes for whoever you want instead of theirs. Guess what, you won't need to produce ID for that! This kind of fraud also doesn't scale well, whereas an attack on electronic voting can do enormous damage.
